Team for Lyon?
Massive game

Surely every player that gets to start will be up for this and with the backing of our away support will give a massive performance.

Needs a massive team tread for us to discuss who that will be, so not sure why this stupid cunt is doing it!

Right Cresswell is suspended.
Zouma has a late fitness test
Someone said Johnson is a doubt, but no idea why they would say that.
Lanzini and Coufal were both back on Sunday, but for me neither did very well, when you would have hoped they would have pulled the team up with their fresh return?

OK who for LB, has to be Johnson.
Who for RB, it's between Fredericks and Coufal, on recent performances, Fredericks has been surprisingly the better player, he hasn't done much wrong. Having said that I would go with Coufal.
CBs, Dawson and Zouma if he passes late test, if not its Diop
Just leaves the question of our attacking midfield, Lanzini or Benrahma to join Bowen and Fornals? We need goals, has to be Benrahma to start.

Oh lastly the keeper, I don't like this give the number 2 a go, and will put Fabianski knowing that Moyes will put Areola. We should play the best play we have in every position!

Fabianski
Coufal, Dawson, Zouma, Johnson
Soucek, Rice
Bowen, Fornals, Benrahma
Antonio

Whilst I here spouting too much shit, I'll add, Exile, people say more stupid things on here that sensible stuff so get on with it a do the threads!

I've very rarely prayed, but it's tempting to try anything that might dissuade Moyes from picking Arthur tonight

Can't believe it will be anything other than :

Areola
Fredericks
Dawson
Diop

Antonio

Some fucking clowns on here, you pick the player that helped get us here FFS.

Have you forgotten the save he made against Seville ?

Areola all day long

Re: Team for Lyon?
Areola for me, he's played every cup game and done well.

Oh and I doubt Fab makes the save against Seville, we wouldn't even be discussing this game.

Re: Team for Lyon?
We played Areola last week which was also a Europa League QF game so I'm guessing Moyes will stick with him tonight.

Re: Team for Lyon?
I would go for Fabianski in goal as he is our current first choice. Next season who knows.

It’s a cup final today. Pick best team.

This is a shop window game for Diop. He should be suited to Lyons style of play and chance to show clubs in France he can still play.

Re: Team for Lyon?
Agree with the OP, you play your first choice GK for European QF. It's what every team does.
99% on here picking Areola.

Re: Team for Lyon?
Zouma out (c&p)

West Ham’s European hopes have suffered a blow after scans revealed that Kurt Zouma’s ankle injury could rule out the defender for the rest of the season.

Zouma has not travelled to France for the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon on Thursday and is unlikely to make a swift return. The commanding centre-back was forced off during the first half of West Ham’s 2-0 defeat by Brentford last Sunday and tests have indicated that the France international is facing at least a month on the sidelines.

“We’re still getting him checked fully,” David Moyes said. “It’s a really big blow, but it happens in football.”

West Ham, who drew 1-1 with Lyon in the first leg last Thursday, are clinging on to hope that the initial prognosis is overly pessimistic. Zouma has been a key player since his £29.8m move from Chelsea last summer and Moyes will be desperate to have him back for the run-in, especially as Angelo Ogbonna is out for the season with a knee injury.

The prospect of being without his favoured centre-back pairing against Lyon will be a major worry for Moyes. Craig Dawson has done well since coming in for Ogbonna but there are concerns over Issa Diop’s form. Diop struggled after replacing Zouma in the 29th minute against Brentford and was at fault when Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring.

The worry for West Ham, who are sixth in the Premier League and still in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, is that they were leaky when Ogbonna and Zouma were out at the same time earlier this season. Dawson and Diop were an unconvincing partnership in central defence, though Moyes backed the latter to step up against Lyon.

Another complication for Moyes is that West Ham are also without Aaron Cresswell against Lyon after the influential left-back was controversially sent off during the first leg. Ben Johnson is in line to fill in for the 32-year-old.

Moyes could tweak his system to counter Lyon’s threats. A back three is a possibility and there is a chance that Declan Rice could drop back from midfield to bolster West Ham’s defence. “Declan’s played there before and would give us a different dimension if we had to play him there,” Moyes said. “We’ve got that possibility but we know he’s a big miss if we take him out of the middle of the pitch.”

Moyes is confident that West Ham will reach the last four. “We’ve got a great chance,” he said. “We’ve got a wee bit of toughness about us. Let’s see what we can do when we’ve got 11 men.”

Michail Antonio will lead the line for West Ham but has scored once in his past 17 games. “I’m disappointed I’ve not scored in a while – this is the longest streak I’ve had of not scoring a goal,” the striker said. “But it’s about being a team player and that’s what I’m doing, I’m bringing the team together. I feel I’m helping the team.”

Lyon, 10th in Ligue 1, have injury worries over their goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and their key midfielders Tanguy Ndombele and Houssem Aouar. Ndombele, on loan from Spurs, scored Lyon’s equaliser in the first leg. Lucas Paquetá is a doubt after he did not train.

Tomorrow’s referee loves a card or two.

Did us in Seville.

Fifth.
And any others thinking Frederick's is in anyway decent.
He was not goal side and thus passed straight to Ndombele, harsh but true. He's always out of position. Will give him some credit for listening to orders in the 2nd half.
Coufal and Soucek work better down the right too.
Diop has to be disciplined.

Re: Team for Lyon?
Sounds like Johnson is available as he has been fully training this week. So the prospect of the accident prone Arfur is at least avoided.

We have Lanzini back for this leg and I assume Rice can be fully committed as any booking will not rule him out of next game?

So really comes down to tactics and whether Moyes goes 5 at the back to compensate for Diop's "vulnerabilities" ( losing his marker, out of position, ball watching and not putting his body on the line to shots and in challenges ) or stay with a 4.

Moyes is not a gambler or one for change so I expect us to start with:
---- Areola
Fredericks ---- Dawson --- Diop ---- Johnson
--- Soucek -- Rice ----
Bowen --- Lanzini --- Fornals
---- Antonio

Coufal's rustiness and lack of real pace will see him on the bench IMO. Benrahma and Yarmo will come on at some point no doubt and especially if we need a goal and are not creating much.

Hope the players are resting well and eat 5 Wetabix before the game as we will need them to run their nuts off like never before in order to get anything.

Re: Team for Lyon?
Yes Fredericks gets caught out when we're out of possession in terms of positioning and in general I'd prefer Coufal.

However, against Lyon at home he actually was perfectly positioned for high crosses and got his head to things, he was unlucky with their goal and was actually in the right place when the ball came off Areola. His pace was needed and did really well against Lyon I thought so I'd definitely play him again.

Johnson was on the bench for Brentford despite people on this thread saying he wasn't. So I've got no idea why people think he's injured.

Wow, apportioning blame before a game. That takes some doing!

Re: Team for Lyon?
Parking the bus is a total no no. We got away with one last Thursday, I'm not sure we can defend with as much guile and luck again tbh. We have got to have a go at them and keep their quick wide men occupied in their own half. Benny boy will have to pass once he's beaten his man and Bowen will scare them with his runs.

Central midfield players need to hurl themselves at the ground and roll around like they've been shot with an elephant gun each time Lyon attack.

Re: Team for Lyon?
The only reason why Moyes would pick Masuaku is so fans would focus on him for a defeat rather than upon his own negligence in January. I would sooner see a youngster on the bench (or in the team) rather than him.

El Scorchio 4:28 Wed Apr 13
Re: Team for Lyon?
I think the team largely picks itself, especially in defence which is a big worry

Areola

Coufal (if fit enough- otherwise Fredricks)
Diop
Dawson
Johnson

Rice
Soucek
Fornals

Benrahma
Antonio
Bowen

Tough one with Benrahma. He played shit in the first leg but really got at them down the left, before he kept losing the ball and could easily have made a lot happen if he weren't having such a stinker. Absolute coin toss between him and Lanzini and it's harsh to leave Lanzini out. Fornals for energy and workrate has to be in there for me.

Re: Team for Lyon?
Fredericks was caught the wrong side from a goal kick smashed upfield and let Richarlison in, cushioning the ball brilliantly for his opponent. He THEN made a nice recovery tackle.

Re: Team for Lyon?
daveyg - yes, I am well aware of Fredericks' weaknesses, but unlike you I am also prepared to acknowledge his strengths, like when he used his pace to nick the ball off Richarlison's toe the other day, saving an almost certain goal.

Anyway, if it's true that Johnson is out, Fredericks will certainly be playing, though which one of him and Coufal will be on the left, I don't know.

Those who are advocating a back three, who's the third one after Dawson and Diop? And don't tell me Rice - no way is that going to happen.

Mex Martillo 3:50 Wed Apr 13
Re: Team for Lyon?
I agree Fifth, no idea where it came from, it was on other threads? Johnson was on the bench for Brentford and I can't see any reason why he will not be available for tomorrow.
Anyone know who has traveled to Lyon?
